Thank you for being a CCPLS cardholder and a Hoopla user! We are happy you are utilizing this service.
We have received a lot of positive feedback regarding Hoopla and certainly plan to keep the service for the foreseeable future. We are asking for your help in making the best use of our funds allocated towards Hoopla.
Here’s how it works: The library is billed each time an individual item is checked out. It does not matter if the item is read–only that it has been checked out. Here are some ways you can help us keep costs down.
- Try to finish the item during the initial check out period, so you do not have to check it out a second time.
- Only check out items when you are ready to consume them, rather than checking out multiple items at a time. Remember, Hoopla is an on-demand service, so items are always available!
- Let us know if you check out an item that is not working or otherwise malfunctioning, so we can contact Hoopla for a refund.
To cut costs, we’re also going back to 8 checkouts a month.
Back in spring of 2020, we extended our Hoopla borrows from 4 to 8 to 10. At the time, many people weren’t coming into the library to check out physical materials, so the limit of 10 was a way for us to offer more at-home resources.
As Hoopla has become more popular and the price of materials has increased, however, we need to take a step back in what we provide. Starting September 2, 2025, we’re going to go back down to 8 checkouts per month.
According to our stats, most users taper off their borrowing until we get to 10. We’ve discussed ways to affect the fewest people in this shift. Hopefully this change won’t disrupt your ability to read, listen, and watch from Hoopla too much.
If you hit the 8 borrows mark and need more content, try using Libby!
Supplement your Hoopla usage with Libby, an app provided by OverDrive. While Libby does sometimes mean you have to wait for titles to become available, their pricing models are less expensive, which enables us to stretch our limited dollars much further.
Did you know…? You can use the Notify Me tag to let us know you want a book on Libby! We can see what people want, which helps inform our purchases.
You can also take advantage of some of our other digital platforms, all of which are free to you with your library card:
- Magzter: Hundreds of current, popular, and niche magazines–available to read for free!
- The News & Advance: Read a digital version of the local paper for free–all you need is your library card!
- Download our app: Put books on hold, see what you have checked out, access e-resources, and get library info
Please feel free to use the contact form about this matter or anything else on your mind. We are always happy to hear suggestions, complains, and concerns. We are here, after all, to serve YOU!
Smiles,
Jordan Welborn
