FAQs for Tutors

Why is the program for adults?

At Literacy Volunteers of Campbell County Public Library, (LV-CCPL) we tutor adults– not children—because we feel that by helping the adults in the community (many of whom are parents) we can empower them to improve their lives by improving their level of literacy. In many cases, this yields positive results for the entire family and for the community at large. Our grants and funding are based upon serving our adult population who are in need of our services.

What kinds of classes and what kinds of students would I be teaching?

We have two main focus areas: Basic literacy (adults who need help with reading, writing, spelling skills), and English for Speakers of Other Languages. Tutors usually meet once per week with their students, for about an hour and a half. Tutors do not need to speak a foreign language to tutor ESOL students. As we match you with a student or students, based on your preferences, choices for materials will be provided.

How much time per week is required?

Initially, while training you can expect to spend 2-3 hours per week to prepare (either in person or virtually). The training can be stretched over several weeks. We do our best to schedule this around your other commitments. You will also need to read and study our tutor manual and watch some videos of tutors in session. The first few lessons may take more time to prepare, but once you are accustomed to it, an hour of prep time per week will probably be sufficient. Most tutors meet for an hour and a half each time, but there is some flexibility.

*Online training options are available to study at your own pace. The in-person meeting with the program manager to enroll/orient you as a tutor will take an hour.

Do I need to have a college degree or teaching experience?

Our volunteers are not necessarily from a teaching background, nor do they speak a foreign language fluently. We have a comprehensive training program and materials designed for our purposes, so we can train volunteers who have the desire to help adults with limited reading and/or English skills. We match tutors with a student or small group and provide support and assistance along the way. The best asset a tutor can possess is to truly care about helping others!

If I train as a tutor, how long am I expected to stay in the program?

We request at least a 6-month commitment from tutors.

Where would I meet with my student(s)?

Tutors and students meet at the most convenient library branch, in a private meeting space. The spaces can be reserved by either the program manager or by the tutors by calling or visiting the circulation desk.

What about teaching materials?

The program has access to a wide variety of teaching materials. The program manager helps in the selection of appropriate materials. We also provide white boards and dry erase markers, and some educational games. iPads can also be borrowed for use on-site.

What are the costs?

The program is free to both tutor and student, thanks to grants and donations from the community. We love our volunteers and students!

What are the COVID 19 restrictions when meeting?

Students and tutors are recommended to continue social distancing measure such as masks and keeping a safe distance apart. The literacy program has plexiglass dividers for tutor/student use at each library location. Virtual options are also available based on needs of the tutors/students.
