Book Talk — Timbrook
The Campbell County Public Library is partnering with Sigma Tau Delta at Liberty University for a Book Talk on “The Book of Unknown Americans,” by Cristina Henríquez. The talk will focus on two chapters of the book that cover the perspectives of Jose Mercado and Micho Alvarez.
For this book-talk, we plan to focus on two chapters of The Book of Unknown Americans by Cristina Henríquez. These chapters will cover the perspectives of Jose Mercado and Micho Alvarez.
We will distribute copies of the book (or printouts of the selections being discussed) and read through them as a group. The moderator will lead the discussion of various themes in these chapters, namely the humanization of immigrants as juxtaposed with the de-humanization of Americans. In this depiction of characters, the notion of empathizing with others, especially those often marginalized, is present. Additionally, we will cover the role of media in perpetrating stereotypes and the novel’s portrayal of Puerto Rican culture.
